“MY INSTRUMENT IS ANIMAL. EVERYTHING IN IT EVOKES ANIMALITY: ITS SHAPE, ITS SOUNDS, THE ABUNDANT ICONOGRAPHIC IMAGINATION IT HAS CREATED.
AN INSTRUMENT WITH A ZOOMORPHIC CHARACTER, WHO BREATHES, BLOWS, SCREAMS, MOANS. DISSECTING MY BAGPIPE, I WISH TO MAKE THE SHADOW OF THIS BEAST HEARD AND SEEN. » François Robin
For nearly 15 years, François Robin has been engaged in an electroacoustic sound exploration process of his instrument the veuze, bagpipes of the Nantes region within Trafic Sonore, Les Allumés du Chalumeau (with Ronan Le Gourierec), La Circulaire (with Sylvain Girault and Erwan Hamon) or in Comme souffler dans un violoncelle (with Erwan Martinerie).
With L’Ombre de la Bête, François Robin entrusts to the Nantes artist Mathias Delplanque the electroacoustic treatment to offer an immersive music dissecting, exploring, triturating the organic sounds of the veuze.
The result is a wild epic flirting with krautrock, minimalist music, ambient, drone and traditional music. A unique sound that is alternately stormy and luminous, atmospheric and dancing, summoning altogether the iconographic imagination of Jérôme Bosch, the cinematographic universe of David Lynch and the 8-bit digital culture of the 80’s.

The Press says:
- If the intention is to show the beast, we must admit that the musician and scholar of ancient Breton sound rituals does it, leaving us stunned and completely kidnapped. By his side, and this is an element that mostly creates fascination, comes the contribution of the digital gesture of Mathias Delplanque which elaborates and translates a musical language that anyway explodes with fascinating atavic fury. The past in the near future in the shadow of the present. (Mirco Salvadori, Italy)
Vital. (Silence & Sound, France)
